Ingredients and Steps
Big text, no distractions — for the stoveIngredients
- Rice
- Lentils
- Vegetables
- Spice powder
Steps
- 1Rinse rice and toor dal together, then pressure cook them with turmeric and a splash of oil until both are completely soft and slightly mushy.
- 2Meanwhile, dry-roast a mix of spices such as coriander seeds, dried red chilies, cinnamon, and cloves along with a little grated coconut, then grind them into a fine bisi bele bath powder.
- 3Cut a mix of vegetables such as carrots, beans, drumstick, and potato into small, even pieces.
- 4In a separate pot, boil the vegetables with tamarind extract and a little salt until they are just tender.
- 5Add the cooked rice-dal mixture to the pot with the vegetables, along with the ground bisi bele bath powder, and mix everything together thoroughly.
- 6Adjust the consistency with hot water so the dish becomes a thick, porridge-like one-pot meal, then simmer for another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, so the flavors combine fully.
- 7Heat ghee in a small pan and temper mustard seeds, curry leaves, cashews, and a pinch of asafoetida until the cashews turn golden.
- 8Pour the tempering over the bisi bele bath and serve hot, ideally with a side of crisp fried papad or boondi raita.
